Just saying Hello (& sharing some PICS)

Antegy Nov 30, 2006 08:41 PM

Hi everyone,

I'm new here, and new to millipedes. So, I'd just like to say hello, as I expect I might be by this forum from time to time now that I just got a giant african millipede.

It has only been about a week, and so far I think this little girl rocks! So I'd like to share a few PICS with the forum.

I noticed that its hard to find their eyes, primitive as they are, its hard to see black eyes on a black background...

So I took a few shots in infrared, and then her eyes were easy to see!...

That dark crescent shape just above each antenna must be the compound eye...

And it looks like they are able to hide their eyes under that rim quite conveniently, while each antenna is still able to probe around...

The only thing I'm having a hard time getting used to are the mites. I know they're symbiotic, but, having had to deal with parasitic snake mites in the past, I just sort of have a general dislike for mites these days. I'll get used to it eventually, I'm sure...

Thanks for looking!,
- Mark

Thank you very much for sharing. Giant millipedes live a long time and are very interesting. I have 2 that are young. Good luck and keep checking in on the forum.
