sick millipede

spiderchick Feb 19, 2007 03:22 PM

My millipede has been very sluggish for the last week or so. I had two of them, and a couple months ago, the other one died, so I don't want to repeat that experience. I keep her on reptibark, feed her bananas, cucumbers, and sometimes greens. I mist her twice a day, and she usually stays insider her coconut shell. But lately, she's not been hiding a lot, or curling up, or eating. I'm worried, what should I do? please help!

Is it a giant African? Here's an interesting post about the care for these bugs: http://forums.insecthobbyist.com/view.php?id=14937,14937

He also recommends live plants in the enclosure. Some form of calcium is also often recommended for the development of the exoskeleton. I seen calcium sand, cuttle bone, and chalk rock recommended.

If your pede is very large it's possible that it's just old. I'm not familiar with how they behave before molting, but many inverts become less active before a molt. Hopefully this is the case with yours and hopefully someone else will weigh in on this because I have four giant millis myself and would like to know more. For instance, should they not be misted after a molt as is the case with tarantulas?
