Vietnamese Centipede

eddiemnoian May 14, 2008 12:50 AM

just a few questions:

I got a Vietnamese Centipede the other day, how often should I feed it, mist its cage, and how long will it hide in the substrate?

the centipede you got needs pretty high humidity, so get yourself one of those humidity gages and try to keep it around 70-80. i feed my vietnamese centipede a number of different things like worms, crickets, fuzzy mice, and the occasional chunk of banana. i've noticed that she is much more active if she is a bit on the hungry side, and i have also read that it is more dangerous to overfeed a centipede than to underfeed it. i can't really give you a good feeding schedule, but i would say that two 5-week old crickets every 3-4 days is fine. before my centipede eats something bigger like a mouse i usually dont feed it for about a week or two. at first when i got my centipede it didn't do anything but hide. after a couple of weeks i seen it motoring around more often, but she still also likes to hide alot. what im trying to say is when it comes to stuff like centipedes all you can do is try to keep the humidity up, keep it well fed, and keep the cage clean, and not worry cause it will either be ok, or itll die.

ps. these things are insane. they are extremely fast and really strong. i have watched my vietnamese centipede pick up a pretty big peice of driftwood, and move it to the corner of its cage, and proceed to explore the upper corner of its cage. logically i just think that it was exploring for the sake of exploring/finding food, but i can't help but think maybe it was just trying to escape. i have watched my centipede fit through a space that is about half her width. and to top it all off the giant vietnamese centipede has the most potent venom of any known centipede. any slight chance for the opportunity to escape will be thoroughly investigated by your centipede so make sure its in an escape proof cage. like i said, these things are insane, and full of surprises.
