Eggs Not in Soil, Help!!!

elcheal Jun 18, 2003 10:19 AM

My beautiful adult female field cricket Fauna and adult male Cupid had eggs yesterday. I put a dish of moist soil into their cage put Fauna didn't put them in the soil, instead she put them all over the floor. I took out the paper towel on the floor and put it in another container so that they wouldn't step on the eggs. Is it alright that the eggs are on a paper towel? Or should i put them in the dish of soil? Do you think that she'll grow out of doing this or will she always lay them wherever she wants? Can i leave the eggs in the cage, or will the parents eat them(eggs and/or babys)? When will the eggs hatch? HHHHEEEEELLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP! PLS REPLY ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANKS!

The eggs should be placed in damp cotton or you could place them in the moist soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Female crickets usally place there eggs in the deep soil, or sand. How deep was the dish of soil?

A female cricket can lay at the most 100 eggs in her life time. In the future i suggest placing the pairing couple in a different escape proof container with only soil (about 1 in.) for a floor. Leave them in the new container for 4-5 days then remove the parents. Place the eggs in a warm place (you could use a reptile type heater) and keep the soil moist. The eggs will hatch in 2 or 3 weeks.

****Things to keep in mind****
1)Dont place baby crickets with adult crickets because adults will sometimes eat their young.
2)Only Male Crickets will churp when ready to mate, female crickets have ovipositors(it kind of looks like a stinger)
3)When the baby crickets hatch remove them from the soil container
