If your Fire-bellied Toads are anything like mine, they will snatch the prey the second it hits the cage bottom. I usually simply stick the prey item in front of each individual frog and it eats it right away, to avoid competition. I myself have experienced the cricket drowning thing time and time again. It frusterated me so much so that I recently switched to feeding my toads red worms. They're worth checking out. One trick I tried was taking off the back legs of the crickets. I noticed that when they don't have anything to hop around on, they think before they leap a little more. They use their heads a little more and don't jump into the water. This technique stopped the vast majority of crickets from finding the water so quickly. Hope it helps!
