ARE CRICKETS CANNIBALISTIC?

LKitsch Apr 10, 2007 01:12 PM

I read somewhere that some types of crickets are cannibals. I keep crickets for my aquatic turtles, buying several dozen at once and keeping them in a small terrarium.

I've been noticing that they seem to disappear faster than I am feeding them to my turtles. I don't think any are escaping, so I'm wondering if they are eating each other.

I always have plenty of cricket bites or greens available. Any ideas?

Supply protein.

You can use cat or dog chow (without added dyes)--this is generally the cheaper brands. You can also gutload with non-medicated chicken laying mash (which has high protein levels). Some cereals have decent levels of protein, such as (human)baby cereals.

Most crickets cannibalize when they don't get adequate amounts of protein. They will also cannibalize if there is not an adequate amount of moisture available.

If you are not providing enough food for the crickets they will cannibalize each other.. usually feeding on the ones that died or recently molted and unable to get away. You could also be losing crickets due to an enclosure that is not escape proof...it's surprising how little space they need to squeeze out of a container.
