I live in Michigan, but in this state they are found in dark, sheltered, undisturbed places such as crawl spaces, and cellars. A relative of mine opened an electrical box, and uncovered TWO black widows residing inside. In regions with less severe winters they may be found more in the open, but they need more shelter from the weather here. That is just speculation on my part, but I have yet to see a widow out in the open here, so I would look in the same sort of places in your area. Old woodsheds/ woodpiles and trashy places with much detritus and rubble are also good places to look.
