It's been a couple years since Brown Widow Girl came over and identified Brown Widows in the vacant lot next door. We found plenty of empty egg sacs, too.
Our friendly biologist at the Natural History Museum stopped by a couple months ago. Starting at the front porch rail, he collected a BW which had set up housekeeping in one of the curliques. Got several more brown widows from the resin patio chairs, which I usually clear out. Several egg sacs and brown widows.
Oddly, we only found 2 black widows during our search. The back yard used to be dominated by them. It appears that the brown widows are slowly nudging them out of first place.
My neighbor's car is pasted to the driveway with widow webs. I suspect that, when she drives around she may be spreading brown widows.
I showed him a mysterious spider carcass I found dried out on my carpet. It has massive jaws for such a little spider. It turns out to be a dysdera, which feeds mainly on pillbugs. I think that's fascinating, as I didn't know anything ate pillbugs except for grade school children.
