New black Widow!!? HELP!!!!

lightsteps Jun 27, 2005 10:57 AM

Guys i have been reading up on these great arachnids and i was at first sure that the specimen i found was a juvenile female . now i am not sure if it is not a male. the hourglass is lcear and prominent however on the dosal side there seem to be a few darker stripes just lateral the midline. "she" is most tan like a walnut color with black only on the joints between the tarsals and at the tipp of her posterior abdomen. I hope it is a female!!! I have her in a baby food jar with a leafed stem that she has spun a small web on. Fed her two large ants that she happilly sucked the brains right out of and tried to give her a larg cricket but think that she has lost interest with no sign of attempted ingestion. Probably full Huh. let me know what you think. PLEASE help I want to keep her healthy and get her to turn black so i can enjoy the full beauty of this marvelous spider.

To the best of my knowledge it sounds like it will be a female, the little ones I have had all look the same initially but time will tell. You should start seeing some orange appear on the belly.
