12 Black Widows in 2 days

coopdw Jul 12, 2006 07:35 PM

I live in Riverside California, and temperatures have been in the high 90's for about 2 weeks. I found the first BW hanging in the eaves of my roof. I checked all the eaves surrounding my house and found 9 more. I also checked under a couple of outside lounge chairs and discovered 2 there. I found one in my hot water heater housing, which is located outside. 4 egg casings were found from the 12 total widows. 10 were full adults and two were immature. I felt alittle sad when I destroyed them, but I have a wife and 8 cats and 2 dogs; I was concerned for their safty. Instead of destroying the widows, does anyone have any suggestions to get rid of them without killing them? I still have a garage and a shed to go through, and I'm sure I'm find more.

You could try relocating them to an area several miles from where you live. You will always have more widows though, as they are prolific, and spiderlings can travel on the breeze after hatching. Much of California is an absolute widow haven, so they are pretty much unavoidable without repeated bug-bombings and such.

Thank you for responding. I totally agree with you, about going to have some difficulty eradicating them completely. I will take your advice and catch and release them. A short distance from where I live, is a natural preserve. I'm sure I can relocate them to an area where they will survive and not endanger people or pets.

Ah sounds like you had fun. I caught 30 in one day around where I work and that is on the east coast

Well, I'm up 15 but I haven't collected and for the past 10 days or so, because of the 100 plus weather we've been having. I'll catch and release them when I look for them again.
