>>My widow, Charlotte just made an egg sac 2 nights ago, and lately I've been noticing small black dots appear first on the floor on her tank and now on the egg sac itself. I was just wondering if these are the babies, and if they had died somehow due to humidity/temperature complications? Or maybe those are the widow droppings? I've been overfeeding her a bit (6 meals in a week >.< )How small exactly are thes spiderlings gonna be?
The babies are the size of a pin head.. usually a pale tan or tan with slightly red-tinged color depending on the species you have. If the egg sac was laid only two days ago, then it's not babies you are seeing.. takes a couple weeks for the eggs to hatch.
If you have your spider housed in a container that has small holes (like window screen), the babies will be able to escape quite easily.
I always like to remove egg sacs from my widows and put them into a large sealed jar/container with no air holes to prevent escapes after hatching. Large clear plastic pretzel/snack containers make for good nurseries..gives the babies room to spread out from each other.
Below are some northern widows I hatched last year. I had the egg sac in a 2oz condiment cup when they hatched, then moved it all over to a large UTZ snack jar.
