I recently recieved as a gift a 1971 Thunderbird which had been sitting for five years or so at my grandparents' house, undisturbed. Inside one of the rear doors I noticed a widow-looking web, with several (5 or 6) egg sacs, each covered with spike-like prjoections. A quick touch test with a stick confirmed this was a widow web (I don't know of any other local ones that are that tough), and I figured the spikey looking sacs belonged to a black widow. It wasn't until today that I found out this was the egg sac of the brown widow. I know the car made a trip to Florida around ten years ago, and I couldn't locate a live specimen around the web. There were some unidentifiable spider remains, I'm certain a couple of them were unlucky wolf spiders. Finally, none of the egg sacs appeared to have opened. That said, has anyone here encountered brown widows occurring in North Carolina, or is it safe to assume this one may have lived awhile after finding its way into the car after that Florida trip?
