Identification and Care Tips Please!

LadyFishy4 Jun 30, 2004 08:30 PM

Four days ago I found a really strange caterpillar. It had black segments with 4 branched spines per segment. In-between the black segments were smaller segments of yellow with really thin black stripes running around its body. Its head was small and black, and it had two white dots on each black segment, one on each side. All in all, it looked kind of like a black swallowtail caterpillar but it had spines. Also it feed on the Curry plant (helichrysum italicum), insted of parsley. He has since gone into his cocoon/chrysalis stage. It is green with a black strip running down the middle front and small spines on the back. It also has like an iridescent yellow/green shine to it as well as several other brown spots on it. I regret not being able to post a picture yet, as I do not have a digital camera.

I would appreciate an identification if possible (since I have not been able to find it anywhere) and some tips on the care of a cocoon/ chrysalis and the emerging butterfly or moth. Thanks a lot!

Hello,
You could try looking at the "Caterpillars of Eastern Forests" website I linked below to find out what type of caterpillar you have. As for care, you seem to have done a good job as it has pupated and there shouldn't be much to do except make sure it has room to pump up its wings once it emerges.

Good luck,
Chris
