Need native catapillar information

skyewynters Dec 03, 2004 12:55 PM

Where can I find information on what butterflies/catapillars are native to my area (Minneapolis, MN)?

Any help would be appreciated (I'd like to know what to plant in order to get them to come around near the house)

Thanks!

Hi skye,

the Caterpillars of Eastern Forest site should be helpful. I know MN isn't excatly east but there is crossover. It is also available as a book (free!). If you are interested I will dig up the info. the site: http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/2000/cateast/families.htm

here is a good resource for you with a butterfly check list
http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/DG6711.html
and
moths of MN http://www.holoweb.com/cannon/mothsof.htm

Moths of N. America: http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/distr/lepid/moths/mothsusa.htm

there are LOADS of books on butterfly gardening but the one I recommend is by the Xerces Society. They are an invertebrate conservation organization and focus on natural habitats and native plants - great book!

hope this helps!
