How large are these? I think maybe they are grass or sod webworms.

The photos make them look bigger but they are only about 10mm long.

Well Nirvana, there is a strong possibility that may be what they are. Are there dead patches in the grass?

I agree. There are not a lot of gregarious species that feed on grass like that. Here's a link
