Monarch Catapillers

vikij Mar 20, 2005 04:59 PM

Hi
We have LOTS of monarch catapillers on our Swan Plant (milkweed). They have nearly striped it, of leaves. Can we feed it anything else? Someone suggested silverbeet?
We are New Zealand, and are a Early Childcare Centre. Please help us keep these guys alive!
Thanks

Unfortunately, the is no alternate food for monarchs. Have you tried any area plant dealers or nurseries that may have milkweeds? I never knew monarchs were in New Zealand, anyway. Are they an introduced species there?

Hi. Thanks for your speedy reply. We have found some plants at garden shops but they are pretty pathetic and cost $6.00 each. Five catapillers are eating one a day!!
I have no idea where we get the Monarch from but I'm pretty sure it isn't native. They have been around for AGES though!!
Thanks
Viki
