Poplar Sphinx moth question

Idznak May 31, 2005 10:26 PM

hey,

i caught one of these moths yesterday and it has laid about 10 small green grape like-eggs lastnight. and i'm just wondering, can Poplar Sphinx moths lay eggs without mating? and how do you incubate them?

Much thanks,

The moths can oviposit anytime, whether mated or not. The eggs are already there from her eclosion. Mating is what makes them fertile. Chances are, the female moth may have already mated before doing much flying so check her out to see if she lays more ova.
Those are some rather unique hornworms, too. I hope they hatch and if they do, will only take about 4 days. I'd like to see any updates on their progress. They also eat cottonwood.

Thanks for the info . is it healthy for them to eat rock candy sugar water? and is there any proper incubation the eggs need? i've also notice that the eggs are each a little bent, all of them are in the same spot, is that normal? Also, the female, last night, didn't lay eggs but had something come out of its rear end and stay there, is that pheromone? Thanks for all the help. i'm am looking forward to rasing these in the future.
