can anyone identify this butterfly/moth?!?

i am thoroughly stumped. i can't find this little guy ANYWHERE, its not in any of my books, and i havent been able to find it anywhere online. not even sure if its a butterfly or moth, im thinking butterfly, but the antennae are a bit mussed up, i caught it at a track meet and kept it in a piece of paper in my bag so the condition isnt great, but you can still see the markings... i live in upstate NY, if that helps.

i'm going crazy, i need to know what this is! wingspan is approx. 3/4 in.

you are welcome! I LOVE figuring out what something is and also know the frustration when you cannot find it!! Your moth was not something I knew right off hand and had to do a search, but I did decide it was a moth even w/o a close-up of antennae. I began with Peterson's Field Guide of Moths (by Charles Covell) by simply flipping thru the plates and then did a google image search. John's site (CT backyard) is one I love and looked to see if he had one photographed. I live in NH so we are in the same general region. If you are interested in some basic moth-"ing" his book is great and quite entertaining!
