i have a silly question

sorry if i seem rude but i need to know why two things happen.the wooly catapillar changes from year to year in color patterns.why?
and second why is it i only see them crossing the roads i mean i feel bad for them and dont want to squish them i just dont understand.is it a migration thing or do the just need to do it or what?i'm quite confused.sorry for being such a dork but i have a need to know diffrent thing.by the way you guys have some of the coolest pictures of insects and aracnids ive ever seen.i'm super intersested in how you do it and with what i think it may be a cool hobby on the side.thank you for any help you may give in advance.....bill

Personally, as far as predicting the weather goes, I've found them to be on average more accurate than not.
