it is definitely a sphinx moth, but I am not sure which one. I have a few ideas, but photos vary so much. I suggest you post this on www.bugguide.net under their "Request I.D." section and you will have a prompt - and correct - answer soon. There are several sites I could send you to in order to "browse" but I think bugguide is your best bet. I'll look for your post there, but also let us know here which it is!
