Weird caterpilar found in central New Yo

tommot Jul 19, 2006 04:44 PM

about a month ago my mom found a weird caterpilar on the grapevine in my backyard, It basically looked like a giant inchworm, except it had an orange fuzzy nobb on its rear end. Now, the caterpilar is almost index finger, turned brown, and the once fuzzy orange nobb is now hard like an insect exoskeleton and look exactly like a frogs eye

they come in tow "forms" and from your description cannot imagine it to be anything else. It is in the Sphinx moth family (hornworms) and has that little knob and then the "eye" instead of a horn. Grape is one of its host plants. if you kept it and raise it to adult stage you will see it is a very coll moth. Here is a link that show several photos. I have yet to encounter one myself!
