Moth identification please

pilonm Oct 09, 2006 08:30 AM

Hello,

I took that picture of this moth within my cedar hedge in Sherbrooke (Quebec Canada (near Vermont/Maine)) this July 6th. I have a lot of difficulties to identify the family/genus/species. Can someone have the kindlyness to help me please?

Thank you very much in advance,

Michel

Hi Michel,

I do not know what it is but have a resource for you. Go to www.bugguide.net and post it in the I.D. request section. You will likely get a quick reply.

My guess is that it is in the very large family Geometrid Moths (Geometridae), Subfamily Ennominae, Genus Macaria I have linked you to one of their pages and there are some which are similar to yours but rather tattered specimens.

Let us know what you find out. Btw, very nice photo and "framing."

Hi Lele,

Thank you very much for your help by letting me know the www.bugguide.net link. Finally I found it! You were right with the family: Geometridae.

It is Heterophleps triguttaria as you can see at http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/Files/37/Plate37c.shtml (7647).

Thank you again for your help and comment about my picture: It is really appreciated!

Michel

Hi Michel,

Happy to help! I often learn about new species (like yours) when I do my research to help others. bugguide.net is a great place and you have some of the tops there!
