Can anyone tell me if the caterpillars of this species are toxic, when raised on food-grade kale? I'm wanting to feed them to my geckos/chameleons.

Thanks,

Mason

Hi Mason,

Are you in the U.S.? Just curious as I know this is not native to North America but has been introduced and flies locally.

As for your question, I would say that if you have raised it from 1st or 2nd instar on kale it should be fine. They generally feed on mustard/rape/cabbage which I know can be toxic (due to "mustard oil bomb" lol!), not sure if toxic to herps but no sense in taking the chance. Like the tobacco and tomato hornworms, if they are raised on artificial diet they can be safely fed to herps.
