What Kind Of Moth?

OldTime Jun 14, 2007 10:48 PM

Hey I'm mainly a turtle guy but I found this interesting moth on the front door of our house in North Eastern Pennsylvania the other day and was just blown away by the vivid colors! Can anyone tell me what kind of moth this is and something about its natural history? I’m very curious. A few people think I colored this on the computer but I didn't.

Neat looking moth! Dryocampa rubicunda (Rosy Maple Moth).

Lives in eastern US. Larva consume maple & oak. Adults do not feed.

You can query it on a search engine for more info...

haha!! Although I know it's scientific name, the first time I ever saw one it made me think of strawberry and lemon sherbet! Yum!

Hi Lele,

With your Lepidoptera expertise, are there any other psychedelic moths or butterflies...?

This one blew my mind.

I'm so digging these other names! I think it should be called ole’ Psychedelic Sherbert. How about the LSD flyer? The Methamphetamine Moth! Yeah...that’s it!!

LOL!!! getting a bit off track here? Though I do like LSD (or Acid) Flyer!. I find their camouflage and defense mechanisms fascinating! There is caterpillar that picks the petals of a flower and covers itself with them so as not to be easily seen; and another in the leopard moth that releases fluid from it's eyes!!
