Strange moth, can anyone identify?

I found this on the entranceway to my flat, it is a moth ( I think) but seems to have the oddest shaped wings, almost birdlike, can anyone help me identify it?

it is a sphinx moth. Where do you live? You used the term "flat" are you in the UK?
