>>I saw many adults but no luck in finding larva. We didn't do much herb gardening this summer
The funny thing was.. we had plenty of fennel and parsley in our garden at the nature center, but no cats. One of the owners of a local farm market was growing some herbs to show at the county fair..and in the past I would pick through any herbs they had out for sale and take any cats I found to use for educational display. Their hold-back stock apparently was decimated by dozens of black swallowtail cats. They had so many they brought like 33 over to us to help lighten the load. Of course time came for the county fair and they had no plants to show. But what they did was take a decimated rue plant to the fair along with photos of the cats and set up a really cute display showing the lifecycle of the swallowtails in their garden and the title... "Why we have no nice plants to show with this year"... really was a big hit with the other exhibitors lol.
