eggs...

LeoEyes Oct 13, 2003 02:24 AM

Hello,

Ive been having a problem with one of my female leos, Athena. She keeps producing infertal eggs, one clutch after another. She keeps making them, even when its not breeding season. She has had some problems with these eggs, first time this happened she got egg bound. With giving her liquid calcium and meds we did get her to absorb the eggs. But she is still making them. Im entirely sure what to do about this and im worryed she may get egg bound again, im also worryed that her constantly making these eggs will wear her down and cause health problems. She had her first clutch at 6-8 months of age and has been making them every month-2months. she is now a year old. I can only think of one thing to do, and that would be to breed her, hopefully getting her into the "breeding cycle" and stop her from making eggs all the time, or at least not during the off months. would this help at all? Shes 85 grams, so weights not a problem. Got any ideas?

Also if breeding her os the best solution i do have 2 males, both are great geckos :-]. I will just need some care info for eggs and babies ect. Thx

I would let her stop laying on her own. I understand she has plenty of weight, but it would be my guess that she needs a decent break from egg laying before she is bread again. She should stop, given time. If you have any specific egg/hatching questions, let us know. Best of luck.

a thing to keep in mind is she wasnt breed when she started laying eggs. She just started making infertal eggs, and has been for a bit now, I thought at first it might just be a "fluke" or a seasonal thing but she hasnt stopped, im worried that if she continues to make these infertal eggs she wont stop or get egg bound. I have heard that fertal eggs are much easyer to lay then infertal ones...

Wow, I dont think there is any way to make her stop. She just has to go thru her cycle. I had a first year breeder this year lay over 10 clutches.

Hmm, my friend is having this problem, kind of, with one of his females. We bought a breeding colony of 6 adults and some babies from this guy and he said that the females were about to finish up their laying season. We decided to house all of them separately until next season to let them get used to their new homes and build up there health again. This all seemed fine except for one of his geckos which will NOT stop producing eggs. At first, it seemed okay because most of the eggs were fertile and we were expecting another clutch or two anyways. But this one female keeps laying clutch after clutch and now they are coming out infertile. The last clutch came out only 10 days after the one before it! The eggs come out SOOOOo small and practically already caving in. She is a lot smaller than 85g though.

I would say that 85 grams is HUGE for a yearling that has been producing eggs non-stop for some time now. I agree that you should get her to stop somehow, but at 85g, I wouldnt worry too much about her getting too skinny. I would just worry about her becoming eggbound. I know this might sound dumb, but have to tried dropping her cage temperature 5-10 degrees depending on what you have it at now? Other than that, I wouldnt know what to tell you either, other than that if she stays healthy, she could be one heck of a breeder! Personally, I wouldnt try introducing her to a male until after she has time to stop laying and rest up. But thats just me.. and what do I know Best of luck...

Joe
