Carolina mantis observations

kungfu2811 Oct 10, 2004 09:51 PM

I thought I would share some of my observations with you guys, so here they are...
When the mantis seemed weak, and continued to fall off of the top of the cage, and couldnt get back up, I put a very leafy twig in the cage, and sprayed the mantis and the cage heavily. The mantis seemed to regain strength within about 30 minutes, and returned to its normal state.
Another thing, about breeding them. They only seem to want to breed at certain times of the day. In early afternoon, I placed the male in with the female. He showed no interest in her at all. A short while later, the female was eating him. But in early evening, when I placed another male in with the female, he showed interest, and began mating within the hour. The time when I observed the quickest response from the male, was at about 10:00 at night. I placed the male in with a female, and they were mating within minutes. Dont females release pheremones to attract mates? Mabey they only release the pheremones at certain times of the day.
Ill let you know of any other interesting things that I observe with my mantids.

It must depend on the individual mantid. The last pair of them I had would mate anytime I put them together. Time did not matter. And they would mate for like 12 hours minimum. See my posts below on Carolina mantids.
