Unicorn Mantises

rahl1972 Oct 14, 2004 06:55 PM

I was wondering if anyone has any info on unicorn mantids. I have placed an order for 5 L3 unicorns and I'm having trouble finding much info on them. I can't hardly find anyone that has ever had them either. I'm wanting to know how big they get...humidity requirements....temp range...and so on. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
rahl1972

Go to carolinaspecialtypets.com and write to them, they are getting unnicorns soon and know how to care for them.

Hey, did you get your unicorn mantids from Orin??? I'm assuming you did because I think he's the only guy in the country right now that has them. Orin's a great guy to deal with, and I just got one of the unicorn mantids from him 2 days ago. Be prepared to see that these guys are TINY. Other than that, I understand that they can be housed like any other mantid, with no real specific heating or humidity requirements. You'll have to feed them fruit flies for a while until they molt probably about two more times. I'm keeping mine in the 4oz. condiment cup that he came in. They should be fine in that for several more weeks.

Yeah,

My mantids are all five coming from Orin. I'm really kind of hoping to breed them. There needs to me more people working with them. I kills me to look at some sites of breeders outside of the US and to see the HUGE variety that they are working with. Here in the states it seems...there is a much more limited supply and variety. Is yours still eating fruit flies??!! I was hoping that they would at least be up to pinhead crickets by now. Do you have a pic? I would love to see the little guy! LOL

I totally agree with ya. Orin is a great guy to deal with. The unicorn mantids are really pricey though, so I'm assuming you dropped a pretty hefty chunk of cash on them lol. Right now I have 7 different species of mantids and I'm begining to breed them. I'll take a picture of the unicorn mantis tonight and post them up here asap.

I just read something on the net that says unicorn mantids are native to US, is this true? I thought that they lived in africa, or some other continent, just didnt think they were native to US.

Thanks,
Andrew

Unicorn mantids are found in southern Arizona and Mexico....if I'm not mistaken. It really is very hard to find very much info on them. Hopefully I can gather up more info on them in time.
