ootheca hatched

Rick1978 Oct 20, 2004 05:38 AM

Well my chinese mantids hatched the other night. Looks to be over a hundred. This is the ooth laid by the female that is still alive and well. She has laid three ooths since then. These guys are fun to watch so far. The ooth was laid on Sept. 1st. So it took exactly 20 days to hatch! These guys caught me by surprise and I did not have the flies yet. But they will be here this week so it's ok. Had a few die on hatching and some since for unknown reasons. Here is a pic where you can see a few of them. Sorry about the pic quality. Thanks to those who gave advice on the board along the way.

Those little buggers look great! It's good to see a successful hatching, and in such a short time as well. Are you going to seperate them, or keep them in the same tank until there are fewer??

It is a ten gallon with plenty of plants. So I guess I am going to keep them together for now. They are fun to watch. Not trying to eat each other yet. I still have a few stragglers coming out of the ooth over 24 hours later! They are quite active little guys. I was surprised they came so quick too. Right at 45 days. I think I said something else in the last thread that was wrong.
