Shipping mantids

kungfu2811 Oct 20, 2004 09:56 PM

Why cant mantids be shipped into the US from other countries anymore? Is it because of 9-11? I have had mantids shipped to me from the UK before with no problems, and its really killing me to see all of those UK websites selling wahlbergii's and such.

No, its not because of 9-11. Its never been legal- even when you got them before. Mantids are considered plant pests by USFW because they prey on plant pests, and therefore, a hazard to transport for fear of alien species being introduced and causing damage. You must have APHIS permits to have them in the US, and export/import permits to get them from other countries. Legally importing is very expensive, which is why hardly anyone does it.
