Egyptian Mantis pic

PeterGoezinya Nov 04, 2004 07:30 PM

Hi folks. I just checked on all of my mantids and my one egyptian mantis was laying her second ootheca so I grabbbed my cam and snapped a pic and figured I'd share it with the board. This was her second one, you could see the first one in the top right of the picture attatched to the lid of the container. I'm happy to see she's producing so well!

I've had an Egyptian mantis (M. paykullii) lay 27 fertile ooths from one mating. She lived 8 months as an adult!

You will want to remove the oothecae or you may never know they hatched. Female Egyptian mantids have a knack for eating every last hatchling in less than an hour (you can tell if one has hatched though because of the tiny white strings sticking out of the emergence side of the ootheca).
Glad they're doing well.

It is the opinion of this mantis breeder that you should mail that ootheca to me immediately.

That's just my opinion though...

Thanks for the info Orin. I'm going to take all of the oothecas out and put them into one insect cup once she lays a few more. As far as I know, it is advised to attatch the oothecas to other surfaces using a dab of super glue... it's this okay? Anyone know from experience?? Also, DeShawn, you dont have any of these species at the moment?

Egyptians hatchout perfectly fine if the ooth is placed on the bottom of a container, either on its side, or facing up.
