Sexing Number 9's problem.

PeterGoezinya Dec 03, 2004 04:10 PM

Hey folks, I need a hand sexing my P. Wahlbergii's. I have two that now had their adult molt, but I'm having a hard time sexing them. It's too difficult to count the segments on their abdomen so I'm trying to find what the other methods of sexing them are. Something about their shoulder lobes being wider then their head for one gender and not in the other. Can you guys shoot me any tips???? Thanks!

you will easily see wot sex they are just through the
size of them as the male is quite smaller..

Exactly. I never can understand why people have trouble sexing adults. Most you can tell just by glancing at them. Look at the end of their abdomens. The two sexes look completely different there. Counting segments is for juvenile mantids mostly.

Yes, I am aware that the females are bigger, but when you dont have another one to compare it two it's alot more tricky. If you have a small one next to a large one, then it's easy. You need a basis of comparison. I know there are other methods for the #9's but no one seems to know them. Ahh well, I'll figure it out.

Well aren't all mantids sex organs basically the same looking? Just look there. They look a lot different. Also in my experience I can just glance at an adult mantis and tell it's gender.
