Changes in species availability over seasons...

tigermantis Jan 21, 2005 12:11 PM

Has anyone noticed that late summer seems to be the peak time for exotic mantids to be available at pet shops? This is a trend I noticed in my area.

I have never seen any mantids in pet stores around here even though I do check every now and then.

I live in a fairly rural college town, and they can order flower mantids during the summer, though they rarely order them unless someone requests it. Unfortunatly, they don't often know the Latin name of the species, or even the genus sometimes. The lists say "flower mantis" and nothing else. They couldn't get mantids up until about two years ago...I think the mantid bug (no pun intended) is catching on.

I envy the folks in the UK...they seem to have a lot more species available captive-bred.
