I have read that female mantis die a short time after they lay the egg cases. What about the male? How long do they live?

They DO NOT die right after laying their eggs. Most female mantids can lay several egg cases throughout their adult lives. They can live for quite some time after laying the first one and continue to lay another one every few weeks or so until they do die. The actual total life span varies between species.

Males of any species seem to last no longer than about 4 mos, while females can clear 1 year with proper care, laying MANY ootheca in this time frame.
