egg case without mating?

kilombo May 28, 2005 11:08 AM

Hello guys and girls I am a little new to the mantis world but this I bet is going to sound weird.
I've had a Indian mantis for almost 8 months when it came it was L2 the pet shop said, very small, now after 8 months fully grown with no other mantises around she has laid one egg case so far I know she is a female cause she has 6 segments and she's huge, the question is how this happend and are those eggs fertile, and is this normal....is she dying?
Thanks for the help

Females will produce ootheca, regardless of whether or not they have been mated. You may be able to extend her life by try feeding her a little less. By keeping her slimmer, she'll produce smaller ootheca and it will be less stressful on her. Plan on seeing more ootheca in the future. Now that she has started laying, she will continue to do so.
