Hatching Jungle Nymphs

xenobug Sep 19, 2005 11:38 PM

I was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips on hatching jungle nymph eggs? I got a few of them a week ago and put them on top of moist coconut bark. Today I noticed a few of them had white mold growing on them and a couple have cracks in the shell! Am I doing something wrong?

I have only hatched Extatosoma tiaratum eggs. I would suspect that the coconut bark would be the origin of the white fungus. The cracked eggs somehow were dessicated or physically crushed.

I put my eggs in a small plastic lid with paper towels on the bottom. This lid w/eggs in then put into another larger container that I have an inch thick of vermiculite (or you can use perlite) on the bottom. The larger container has holes poked into it & I have a lid on it to retain humidity. The vermic/perlite is soaked & then squeeze out until only a few drops of water come out. I spray this media about once or twice a month depending on loss of moisture. Also, I lightly spray the paper towel w/ eggs. Note: some phasmid hobbyists use peat or other organic media for hatching eggs.

I think you're right. I've moved the non molded ones onto moist sterilized sand and haven't seen any new mold so far. I put the molded ones into a separate container. I know that some eggs can get mold on them and still be ok so I didn't want to get rid of them. I can't tell if they're cracked or not. I need to get a magnifying glass so I can get a better look at them.
