my son and i caught these in our yard over the weekend, r they male and female or is the smaller 1 a juvinele, the larger 1 is on the bottom appx 3in

I think you actually have 2 different species there. I live in So. Cal. also, and have seen both of them. I think the big one is a Carolina species. Definitely a female. The smaller one is harder to sex from the angle of the photo, but I think it may be a sub-adult female California mantid. Does the smaller one have a little oval spot on the underside of the abdomen?

yes, on about the 4th segment from the rear its tannish color
