The oldest boy I care for came into the house with a brown mantid. I know very little about them but am interested in him keeping it as a pet- they seems fairly easy to care for.

Boys have 6 sections on underbelly, correct?
It appears that this one is male, and has a film over it's eyes? Could that be possible pre-shedding sign?
How should I approach handling it? I would like for the boy to be able to, but am wary as I don't want myself or any of the kids to be bitten.
