winter feeding in US

stickem Nov 12, 2007 01:42 AM

I am a new stick bug owner - have Pink Wings and Indian. They were doing pretty well on organic Romaine lettuce, but they seem to have stopped eating it, and the hatchlings who were born about a week ago haven't touched it at all. Now that we are into winter, I don't know what else to feed them. Any ideas on where I can get some food? I live in Colorado.

Hi,

I am relatively new, too (August). I live in the northeast and have Indians and some others (no pink wings). I have just managed to transfer all my Indians to Wandering Jew (houseplant). I have adults and newly hatched nymphs (by the day). I trim the leaf margins for the nymphs so it is easier for their tiny mandibles. I didn't expect hatchlings until spring but they surprised me! I have some of the nymphs on rose as I was able to collect the invasive multiflora rose which persists into winter in protected areas (depending where in CO you are you may well find some wild rose) and also found an organically grown miniature rose at a local nursery for $7

Not sure about your pink wing other than plants in rose family.

Well i live in the NE part of the country and i have the same problem in the winter. I have many different kinds of sticks and i order my bramble from a lady in OR. It shows up fresh at my doorstep and is fairly cheap. I also experiment during the summer trying some of the plants that stay green all year round like Euromymous, ivy, and such. I have 2 guava plants that i keep indoors that do very well as a houseplant. Everything i have seems to like that too.

Thanks to both of you for the helpful info. Who is your contact in Oregon? I've searched the web and can only find places in England. I guess I can try feeding my houseplants. I'm afraid I'll kill them with something....
