Orange head roaches

snmreptiles May 26, 2004 11:18 PM

Hey everyone. I am new to this whole roach thing and have a few questions. I had an original group of 12-14 orange heads. I was keeping them on coco fiber bedding and learned that it was too moist and cool for them. So I switched them to paper towels as a substrate. They have paper towel rolls and egg crates in with them also. I put oat meal covering about 1/4 of the enclosure for the babies to find cover in. I am finally getting babies now that I have changed to this set up and they seem to be eating better, but they just don't eat that much at all. They are also eating eachothers wings. I offer various veggies and fruit. They have dry dog food and a powder mixture I feed to my crickets also (bee pollen, soy flower, wheat germ, rice baby cereal, and chick mash, all blended to a powder)available to them at all times. I have found two or three of them just dead, and don't know why. The one that I found today was a nymph that had just grown in it's wings not too long ago. Just curious on anyones input on them dying, maybe what their life span is. Also any info on diet needs would be greatly appreciated. I have heard that they need more protein, so what is a good source for that? Thanks again for any help.

I am no expert (not even close). I raise death heads and I believe they are similar enogh to yours to compare. I use a bedding of bran 1-2". Temps need to be high 80s. I feed chick feed, fruit, veggies, and for protien the get chicken or turkey once a week or so. Since starting on the protien they grow much faster. Keep the humidity as high as you can without getting the interior damp.
