Gotta question please..... on insect ID

MissHisssss Aug 14, 2004 02:16 AM

At first I thought it was a roach, but after I saw it's face I'm not sure. It has like pinchers for a mouth. It's three inches long and 3/4 inch wide not counting it's legs. It's a very dark reddish brown/black. It didn't move very fast... or perhaps it's dying. I live on the El Paso Texas, New Mexico border. I've never seen a roach/beetle this big before and thought I'd ask. I wish I could get a pix of it. I tired to find one like it online with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas?

Are the pinchers out from the head?
are the two wings( eleytra) hardish and shiny, while the underwings tissue like?
If yes, my guess is a beetle. Look up bark and Hercules beetles on the web.( you know what a scorpion looks like, right?)

It's neither one of those. I didn't see it's under wings. I'm hunting the web for one that looks like it but haven't had any luck yet.

Thanks so far....
