hisser mites

b_ha Aug 25, 2004 07:19 AM

I read several caresheets on keeping hissers and a couple said to try bran as a substrate. I keep my superworms on bran and have had no problems.
So I picked up some hissers a couple weeks ago and have noticed that they have little reddish mites crawling on their bodies. I don't know if they had them when I got them or if they got them from the bran. I have never seen mites with my worms.

I'm kind of confused about these little mites. I read somewhere that certain mites do not cause any harm to hissers but some do. Are mites bad or what. Is it common for hissers to have mites? What should I do?

I'm new to hissers myself, but I've done quite a a bit or research, and I know that alot of hissers do have mite, usually depending on the breeder. I ordered from the hissing roach, and mine came mite free. I made sure to heat the wheat bran in the oven before I put it in the container, so kill off bacteria, and, of course, the possibility of mites. Check out the above site- they have some sort of food that supposedly cuts down on mites in a colony. Good luck with your hissers!
