I think these are roaches...

kungfu2811 Nov 16, 2004 06:16 PM

I found what I think are some species of cockroach under a rotting board in a field today. Ive never seen these guys before, they are very small, I managed to capture 2 of them. One looks like it is carrying and egg case, any idea when this will hatch? If I could culture these guys it would be awesome. But I have no idea what species they are. I live in norther CA. Any help is appreciated.

Although it's probalby a common roach (all roaches are common some place or another) I can't name it. Where are you located? Also does it the climb glass in that jar?
You might want to throw in a small piece of carrot, apple or a peice of dog or cat food. I think most roaches can eat these things unless it's some sort of wood roach.
Also give it a place to hide. A peice of bark or toilet paper roll or 2.

I'm not an emtomologist so I can't give you the answers you looking for. Sorry.

I live in northern California. The jar is made of plastic, and the roaches CAN climb it. Do you know when the ootheca that the female is carrying will hatch?

I'm guessing that the roach you have there is one of those 3% of roaches that give all others a bad name....

Stick with Tropical roaches, Much safer dude.

Most roaches I have cared for hatch within a couple of weeks. I can't be certain because all I saw was the venteral view, but I agree with the other post - this looks like a common pest species.

Don't laugh, but the best book I have ever found to key out most common insects has been those little Golden Guides mini-books! They have the absolutely, most easy to identify, drawings. Bear in mind... I am not saying that their drawings are the most complete, they just make the key points stand out better than any other book I have seen!

Common roaches such as these B. Germania (pest species) will invest your home. They are not good to keep around unless you have a very very very secure set-up.
