I don't use any substrate and I keep mine in a rubbermaid tubs as well. I clean mine out comlpetely 2x a year (change out tub and egg crates) and spot clean (clean out the droppings) every month. Without any substrate is very easy to use a whisk broom to do my spot cleaning. This is just the way I have been doing it and what works for me and mine.
If you have alot, then substrate is a bad idea. Egg crates work fine though, and paper towel tubes. To clean I would scrub the container under warm-hot water, then dry. Depending on how many roaches you have, if theres more than 100, I would clean once a month to prevent mold.
