Male Hisser in Disguise?

youresoorganized Apr 30, 2006 02:57 AM

I have three hissers that as far as I can tell are all female. One I've had for almost a year and the other two I've had for 3 to 5 months. I recently installed a reptile heating pad under the tank and began feeding them a wider variety of food. I'm now on my second batch of nymphs. We noticed the first batch about a month ago and unfortunately all of them died. Is it always obvious when a hisser is a male or can they appear to be female? I've closely examined all three and none of them have any of the signs (horns, fuzzy antenna) that indicate a male. I also saw one with her egg sack protruding just the other day, so I think more nymphs are coming! My question is, how can they be reproducing?

HI.
I did some primitive experiments on female hissers and no males....
one was mated once, then isolated totally from all males. She had three different broods... the last one did not hatch from the egg case.. she aborted it. So, did you get your female already mated?

Lets hear from the experts n this one.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I'm sure the last two must have already mated. I'm wondering how long they will continue to have nymphs. I guesss time will tell. I also would love to hear from the experts about this!

Thanks. I searched through the forum and found a couple of other messages about this, so I guess it's not as unusual as I thought.
