best way to heat...

lele May 13, 2006 05:54 PM

My UTH is busy working as an incubator for some tiny herp eggs and my one heating pad was recently needed for human use. I have a ceramic heater but not sure if that would be too much. I have two large containers (plastic) of discoid and orangehead and a smaller discoid (just picked out my best nymph as potential breeders).

What do you all use - would be interested in seeing other's setups. I live in NH and it is rainy and raw and we don't keep the house all that warm (I have the containers near the radiator for what it's worth).

My adult discoids have been having a terrible time aborting oothecas and I think heat might be the culprit

thanks!

I have usually noticed tyhat they abort because of being distubed far to much. Try to leave them alone for a longer period of time and only for very short times in seconds every few days. I only disturb mine for a few minutes every 2 or 3 days just long enough to feed them and spray down the inside of the aquariums.

Since you asked for the information I have a very detailed site complete with photos and the methods that I used for my animals at the below link that is attached to this thread. Click on the Cage and Care link of my "Raising Exotic Roaches" area. NOTE: I am not in the business to sale anything at this time but I do post my successfull methods for those who can use it to benefit their reptiles and arachnids.

WARNING, MY DESIGN WORKS ONLY IF IT IS DONE EXACTLY AS I HAVE DONE RIGHT DOWN TO THE MANUFATURER AND THE PRODUCT!!! Any deviation from my method AT ALL could cause the animals to freeze to death or be cooked alive. WARNING, ELECTRICAL HEATING DEVICES ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. TAKE THE PROPER FIRE PREVENTION PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING ANY OF THEM.

Best Of Luck,

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply and the link to your site - quite impressive!

I do not bother nor handle my roaches much at all except when collecting a few to feed or cleaning. I have my breeders seaprated from my feeders.

I keep a small colony b/c I have only a few animals that eat them so as neat as you setup is, it is a bit too much for my needs, however I did take a few tips away from it.

thanks!
