New non-carrot hisser ambrosia?

SnakeLady May 29, 2006 09:41 AM

Howdy there! Wellp, reckon I'm the new gal when it comes to roaches, and insects in general (usually a reptile person - but now with 4 tarantula species, 2 African pedes, and a colony of Madagascar hissing roaches). Its the roaches I'm writing about today.... Everywhere I go I find segments on their feeding where carrots are considered the "Ambrosia" of hissers... I think I have recently come up with another food that disappears as fast, if not, faster then carrots in my cage! I actually peeked in and saw my big male chowing on this stuff over the pile of carrot chunks right next door! Its called 'jicama' ("HEE-kah-muh", its some sort of root with a brown fibrous outside (gotta peel it), and a rather crisp white inside that yields a good bit of roach feed. Heck, I love the stuff myself - Not too expensive, although I don't know how easy it is to get hold of for everyone else. Anyhowdy, those are my two pennies, maybe I found a new staple for our noisy buggies? I'd love to hear if anybody else has had the same outcome or gets the same outcome with the jicama?

Thanks for the peek!
-Sara

Some of my roaches like jicama and some do not. It does not usually go like carrots. Carrots are just an easy inexpensive food. our feeders get a wide variety from the farmers market. We feed about 100-200ponds of chick feed and douoble that in fruits and veggies a month. In a pinch, when I have to actually buy fruit or veggies, I feed carrots or apples, whichever is cheapest.
