Endangered Garter Snakes?

Mick Oct 13, 2003 08:43 AM

Hello,
I'm a corn snake person, so please excuse my ignorance. My second grade son has been assigned to do a report on an endangered animal, "The Garter Snake". Now I know about the San Francisco Garter, but are there other subspecies that are endangered? Surely not the whole species/genus?! TIA!

No, not the whole species or genus. People unfamiliar with herps (or maybe pushing an agenda?) tend to make generalizations like that.

This will be a great opportunity for your son to point out the gross buffoonery on the teacher's part by clarifying that fact. The teachers I had to do that to HATED it! Just goes to show that just because someone's in a position of authority doesn't mean they're correct all the time.

Another California garter that's protected is the two striped garter (Thamnophis hammondi).
