I have seen a dragonfly on my pond several times in the last few days appearing to "kick" the water with his (her) abdomen. This is a fairly large dragonfly, about 3" long, and a dusty red in color. What does this behavior mean?

It sounds like the dragonfly may be depositing eggs; however, this is usually done on floating sticks, twigs or submerged aquatic plants.
